Start with a central Sorrento base when you want to walk to dinner and use public transport for selected outings. A hillside stay can suit quieter days, but check every return journey and luggage transfer. A sea view alone does not establish easy access, and a train connection to Sorrento does not continue along the entire Amalfi Coast.

Compare the walking route from the station to the property, not just the straight-line distance. Ask about stairs, slopes, lifts and luggage help if these affect your group. A central room can justify a higher nightly price when it removes repeated transfers; a quieter property can still work if its transport arrangements match your days.
Separate your arrival into stages
EAV publishes the Naples–Pompei–Sorrento railway timetable. Check it for your travel date, then plan the airport-to-station journey separately. Leave room for baggage and delays. Compare a direct transfer for your group against the complete public-transport journey, including the final trip to the room, rather than comparing only the train fare.
Give day trips their own transport plan
A day in Naples, a visit near the railway and a coastal outing are different journeys. Pick one priority per day and check the return before setting out. For ferries, consult the operator for your exact route and season; weather can affect service. Keep one local day free so a disruption does not force you to abandon the trip’s main purpose.
Compare a few rental days, not automatically a week
If one particular excursion needs a car, cost that day separately. Include collection and return time, parking at both ends and the rental deposit. Ask the property about access and parking before reserving. Avoid planning a tight onward flight after a scenic driving day; the itinerary should have room for ordinary delays.
